An exploded coffee machine
Sainsbury's Incident - 2010

Running a cafe business has enough of its own pressures; so when someone comes along and tells you there are Regulations about Pressure and your Coffee Machine, you don't have the time to figure out whether it applies to you or not. So let us give you a quick rundown as to:

  • What PSSR is

  • Who it applies to

  • Why we have it

  • How The Coffee Medics can support your business

Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR) 2000

The PSSR regulations were put in place to prevent serious injury as a result of the failure of a pressure system, or one of its parts.

PSSR isn't a dedicated regulation for cafe owners; rather it is aimed at every industry that uses machinery that stores steam and/or pressurised gas. The important word there being "Stores".

You can read the regulations on the HSE website.

Who it applies to

As mentioned above, any equipment that stores pressurised gas or steam falls under this regulation. This directly affects the Coffee industry because the majority of commercial coffee machines have a steam boiler for frothing milk. It doesn't matter if the steam boiler is set to a low pressure, if it stores steam at any pressure, it falls under these regulations and is a Legal Requirement to have your machine inspected regularly.

Why we have it

These regulations are vitally important to keep users (you and your staff) and the general public safe. You may remember the explosion at the Sainsubury's in 2010. A regular inspection of the machine and its safety devices will ensure accidents like that never happen again.

How Can The Coffee Medics Help

Coffee Machines are our passion. With over 10 years of experience in engineering, thorough inspections and appliance repairs, we are equipped to look after your coffee machine through its entire life of service.

We have enrolled on various technical courses to be fully educated in the operation of coffee machines and more importantly, the proper functions of the various safety devices on coffee machines. We have also paired up with Coffee Safe, the industry standard for PSSR inspections, to ensure every inspection we carry out is done to the highest standard. For inspections to conform to the legal requirements, a certificate must be signed by an Incorporated engineer.

Running a business is hard. Let us take away the pressure of maintaining and keeping your coffee machine safe for continual, profitable use.
